After we have visited the three fishing waters of the
Bierhotel Loncium
in Kötschach-Mauthen in Carinthia, the Gail, the Grünsee and the Zollnersee, we were looking forward to tasting our catches. A splendid trout from the Zollner lake was prepared for us freshly as a delicious dinner.
We give special praise to the cuisine of the house in general, because all the dishes we enjoyed during our stay were extremely tasty. But not only the restaurant, but also the hotel gets a big plus from us. The 29 room units focus on wonderful natural materials, a trendy lighting concept and plenty of space to feel good. The house has spacious and charmingly furnished double and single rooms with state-of-the-art bathrooms.
Other goodies are a garden with sunbathing area, a large motorcycle garage, the direct view of the Polinik, the local mountain, the shady beer garden and of course the “Loncium Brew Pub” & the “Stube 51”. For us anglers there is also a drying room and a cozy fishing corner for the exchange of experiences.

At the Beer Hotel Loncium, enjoyment of beer and holiday enjoyment go hand in hand. After all, you live directly in a brewery, this is integrated into the hotel. On the very first day, we were allowed to attend a guided tour of the brewery and enjoy a tasting of all varieties. This is an opportunity that should not be missed!
The head of the house, Barbara Holzapfel, told the story of the hotel and the brewery with pride and shining eyes: “We are Gailtal’s first brewery and have taken up the craft that was already practiced in Mauthen in 1700. Loncium, by the way, is the ancient Celtic name of the village of Mauthen. The pub has also existed since that time and the old building has been successively converted and expanded. For us, sustainability and conviviality are our top priorities. We design everything as we feel and live it. Hop-fully yours is therefore also our life motto and slogan.”
Shining star on the brewing scene
She rightly raves about the quality of the beers she produces. “In our beer manufactory we produce the best craft beers in the country. What began almost 15 years ago in grandma’s soup pot has grown in recent years into one of the most innovative microbreweries in Austria. Currently, 12 different types of beer are brewed throughout the year, as well as seasonal specialties. Numerous state championship titles and international awards bear witness to this. With our own source, the best raw materials, and a lot of love for the product, we can produce delicious freshly brewed beer here. We give our beers the time they require to mature and reveal their full quality. Most of our flagship beers are BIO certified.”
Not surprisingly, the
new ABENTEUER FISCHWASSER beer
also comes from the house of Loncium. This can be purchased Ex Farm just like the other varieties.
Slow Food Travel
Bierhotel Loncium is also a member of the world’s first Slow Food Travel Destination Gail- und Lesachtal. For the guest, this means being able to enjoy a wide variety of regional dishes made from artisan foods. What speaks for a fishing vacation in Hotel Loncium is the fact that it is not overcrowded even in high summer. The region and the Hotel Loncium are definitely worth a visit!
