A fishing water report by Michael Plakolb – Part 2
After our first exploration of Lake Putterersee in Styria, it was clear to us that the next day of our fishing vacation at ABENTEUER FISCHWASSER member Landhotel-Gut Puttererseehof should be dedicated to carp fishing.
My two boys and I equipped the boat with our carp gear and rowed straight to the feeding spot at the back of the Putterersee, idyllically situated in the Styrian Enns Valley. First we decided to fish from the boat directly above the feeding spot and attached it to the buoy
Annoying roach
As I really wanted to catch one of the giant bream, I chose the feeder rod and tipped it with canned corn. My sons tried stubble fishing. It didn’t take long before we had our first bites. They came from the numerous roach that pounced on our bait like piranhas. Finally, a big mirror carp had got lost on Gregor’s rod and had beaten the roach to it. After a few wild escapes, the specimen weighing around 5 kg could be maneuvered into the landing net. The first “photo fish” was landed. Then I had a nice bite on the feeder rod and also briefly caught a carp on the line. Unfortunately, he was able to free himself quickly. In view of the pesky roach, I then switched to Halibut boilies on the hair. A short time later there was a strong bite and the fish was hooked on the feeder. I could feel a nice counter-current and already suspected a big bream.
Powerful torpedo with 12 kilos
At the surface of the water, however, a white Amur about one meter long appeared, which was probably just as frightened as we were, because it pulled away from the boat with a huge surge. The reel whirred loudly and with the thin tip of the feeder rod I couldn’t do much to stop it. We hadn’t packed a large landing net either and I felt queasy at the thought of catching the fish with a folding landing net. But it wasn’t to come to that anyway, because after around 15 minutes of a sweaty fight the line got caught in the rope of the buoy and the beautiful fish was able to free itself.
Thank goodness he wasn’t a lone offender and Gregor had a fish of the same caliber a little later. This time we were smarter and detached ourselves from the buoy. Gregor drilled the fish with aplomb so that we were able to get it into the landing net without too much trouble. We then went ashore for the photo shoot. The beautiful fish was over one meter long and weighed about 12 kg. As a glorious finale, Gregor caught a good bream and a nice scaly carp.
